A Meeting of Experts on the Treatments of Glioblastoma From Diagnosis To Therapy
In recent years there have been important advances in the diagnostic and therapeutic field for patients with glioblastoma: new imaging modalities, new neurosurgical approaches, new radiotherapy techniques and new pharmacological treatments are gradually being proposed, including precision therapy.
This week I was able to participate in an event of the “Educazione Continua in Medicina” (ECM) program organized with the non-conditioning sponsorship of Health4u. It was an event in which the expert doctors discussed and presented to other doctors the innovative approaches in the neuro-oncology field but the information content seemed to me suitable for a wider audience and therefore also for patients who want to have updated information and their caregivers. While waiting to organize new conferences according to the program we presented at the beginning of the year, I thought it would be useful to propose an article dedicated to this event.
Below I have included the video of the recording of the event which was in Italian. The event was organized under the scientific supervision of Giuseppe Lombardi, of the Veneto Oncological Institute, IOV-IRCCS of Padua and Marta Scorsetti of the IRCCS Humanitas Clinical Institute of Milan and was moderated by Marta Scorsetti herself. During the event the glioblastoma was examined from different points of view, starting from the role of imaging in Glioblastoma with Antonella Castellano, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan (in the recording that starting from min 1) to pass to the point of view of the Neurosurgeon with Francesco Signorelli, University of Bari Aldo Moro (in the following recording starting from min 42) and then to the point of view of the Radiotherapist with Isacco Desideri, University of Florence (in the following recording at hour 1 min 9) to finish with the point of view of the Neuroncologist with Giuseppe Lombardi himself (in the following recording at hour 1 min 33). This last part is particularly interesting as it describes in a precise way the effect of the methylation factor MGMT, the results of some interesting clinical trials that have been concluded are presented but above all the talk describes clinical trials in progress and personalized therapy which means personalised on the individual patient and the specific mutations present in his/her glioblastoma, both for new diagnoses and in case of recurrence. A specific case of personalized therapy in the event of a BRAF mutation detected on a patient pre-treated and in recurrence who also included the use of Silibilin with excellent results was presented at hour 1 min 56. New clinical trials involving the therapy personalised based on NGS analysis (Next Generation Genetic Sequencing) are listed at hour 1 min 59.
I hope you enjoyed the video and above all that it provided you with useful information on what is available today in Italy and on the new clinical trials that are coming.
